The cardio myth

Stop the treadmill - You're going nowhere!

cardio.jpg shim.jpg If you keep saying you don't have time to go to the gym, perhaps it's because you think you need to spend too much time there.

I'd say one great culprit to making people feel they have to spend too much time at the gym, is the long bouts of cardio. If you do a lot of biking or running because it makes you feel good, and you have the time; keep it up! This post is more to address those who feel that the gym is just too time consuming and can't find the time to go.

When you use cardio vascular training as your primary method of weight loss, you are doomed to spend more time than you have running on a treadmill; I use the term literally and figuratively. The primary means to control weight is through nutrition. Sure cardio can burn a few extra calories but it's impossible to burn off all the excess you take in.

30 minutes of full body exercise every other day, accompanied with good nutrition will get you to better health and a good looking body through a totally sustainable approach. Put the old myth to bed, that you have to do a minimum of 20-30 minutes of cardio each training session. That particular belief is what I would say is the greatest reason people find they don't have enough time to exercise.

10 minutes of a good pace cardio session with 10-15 minutes of a circuit of weights is all you need to start with. Strength training will build muscle, which helps you to burn calories even while you're at rest. We can't give the same credit to cardio, which actually breaks down muscle and can cause weakness when not done in conjunction with strength training.

So, if all that's been holding you back is the belief that you don't have that minimum 1 hour to spend in the gym; give 30 min sessions a shot and you'll see I'm not wrong.
