Boredom can be a source of stress

When we think of stress, it brings to mind, images of nail biting emotional outbursts! That's not always the case.

office_space.jpg 2.jpg Did you know that boredom and lack of stimulation can also be a trigger for stress? People are curious by nature and require variety or they risk becoming indifferent to what they're doing. Work that becomes monotonous can produce a tremendous amount of personal and professional frustration.

If you just look at how most office environments are set up, you can see that they foster a sense of isolation, which further drives the worker toward boredom and indifference.

The typical cubical is devoid of any stimulation other than the task at hand. Without variety for the senses, the mind begins to wonder and loss of concentration is inevitable. It has been shown time and time again, that a stimulating work environment, even if the stimulation is non work related; produces a happier less stressed worker. Less stress means greater concentration, which means better work results.

It should come as no surprise, when you read articles such as the one in today's local paper-click here for the article- which found moderate internet surfing helps worker to be more productive. How can that be? Well, if you're stuck in a cubicle all day with little human contact or any stimulation, other than a boring policy; the internet becomes a way to temporarily escape. The short pause provides the mind with that jolt of stimulation; just what it needs to refocus and get back on task.

Many companies spend millions of dollars to remove stimulation, seeing it as a distraction from work. It's funny to think that it's actually distraction that the individual needs to become more productive.
