Short term pleasure trumps long term gain!
Let there be no doubt, we all have food temptations, or let's call them weaknesses. If you clearly identify them, you will increase your chances for attaining your health goals.
The temptations that you face in your day to day life are usually sitting right in front of you. There's nothing abstract about a sweet treat beckoning you from the desert cart. Your goal to be more fit and healthy, however, is an abstract thought. It's an idea with no physical presence. You can easily see that a thought may not have the same power of persuasion that a physical temptation in this very moment may have.

As the great motivational speaker Anthony Robbins states, "People seek pleasure and avoid pain to the best of their ability." If we are in fact pleasure seekers, it's not hard to figure out that good intentions to practice healthier living will be challenged by the things that we believe give us immediate pleasure. And those things are usually not the best things for us, such as; smoking, junk food, television, and excessive alcohol consumption.
The goal to become fit is something that will materialize in the more distant future, and events in the future are vague with nothing to really anchor them in the present. With that being said, I'd like to provide you with 3 tips to stack the odds in your favour for avoiding those immediate temptations that can sabotage your long term goals.
-One very important way to overcome present temptation is to know your weaknesses and avoid them to the best of your ability. Until you've become used to your new lifestyle practices, temptation will be very hard to overcome. Giving in to short term pleasure is much more tempting than adhering to the somewhat painful sacrifices that yield long term benefits.
-Don't keep your favourite junk food in the house. Skip right past it in the grocery store and move on to the foods that you know are more in alignment with what will help you toward your goal.
-Always eat before you leave home. Being out of the house and hungry, can leave you at the mercy of whatever becomes available to eat. Too much hunger in the presence of fast food is a killer. So, either pack a meal and go, or eat before you go.
As you get closer to your goal, many of the things that were once difficult to say no to, will become less of a challenge to refuse. Even though the tips seem simple and obvious; what's obvious is not always practiced. So put them to work and see if they get you through the present to a more healthy future.
