Truer Not Newer

I was listening to a recent podcast from Luvvie Ajayi Jones in which she was talking about not being a “new you” in the new year. There’s a lot of ads for fitness equipment, diet programs, etc. that talk about how their product will help you be “a new you”, but Ajayi said something that I really like. She said her philosophy is “new year true me, not new year new me”.

This site is Better Me, not “Newer Me”. I’m trying to be better at being myself, being more consistent in living my values, in being a good role model, in showing up for my family and friends. I’m not trying to be a different person. There’s only one of me and I’m the only one who can do the best job of being me.

Don’t let anyone tell you that you need to be a different person, but it’s good to regularly ask yourself, “am I being true my values, those I love, my community, how about to my great-great grandchildren who will never meet me and will only have stories of who I was and the world we collectively leave them to know me?”

Don’t reinvent yourself, just do better at being you.
